I just (4500 miles ago) had rebuilt a 2.1 I had laying around & installed
in my 84 Westy to replace the still running, never rebuilt 1.9 (173,000
miles) it came with originally.
New heads, bottom end bearings & cam, Gowesty SS exhaust, new alternator &
GW bracket, etc. w/ 12000 mile /1 year warranty. Reused the 1.9 Digijet
fuel injection, noticed a little increase in power, but not that much
different than my 1.9. It runs great & cost moi about $5800+- to rebuild,
R & R engines, etc.
I used a local Vanagon shop that I have worked w/ many times on my 2
Vanagons, & so far have no regrets. Hopefully it is good to go for another
33 years!
YMMV,
