The intermittent pedal behaviour sure sounds like a failing master cylinder. The MC can fail without losing fluid. If it were me, I'd remove instrument cluster, nuts holding MC to booster, then shift MC back and inspect if any brake fluid has leaked out of MC. I'm fairly certain the O ring between MC and booster would reseal well enough (if not tainted with brake fluid). As you likely know, removal-reinstall of the cluster can potentially introduce electrical issues but that's more of a "heads up" than anything. i.e. condition of ribbon and plastic likely depends on how much heat (sun) its seen etc. Neil.
