They're more trouble than they're worth. My 90 2wd Carat was my main transportation in AK for 10 years. I only used normal mud and snows and did just fine. I lived on a hill for part of that time. 


When we moved to Portland it was always fun to cruise at 50-60 by people driving 20 with 4wd and chains. I owned the freeway on those days. 


We had a chain come loose on my brother's car in the 70s. Never again!
