Dear Chain - and at great risk of offending the mod

Several years ago in february while attempting to get from sacramento back to portland with the transplant for the 85 we had just bought - we were stopped at the bottom of shasta pass on the california side - at about 10 pm shiff not allowing anyone with out chains to go any further - all service stations had sold out of any chains bigger then 10 inch wheels - outside there was a guy in an old wreck of a truck with several 5 gallon buckets with chains -- and a line of cars -- the price for a pair of chains was 10 or 20$ installed by him -- the fellow had a long beard - long hair - both a tangle - he had clothes that had long since been retired by the rag pickers son - - he worked with speed and dexterity --

i got in the line up - when we got to him after about 1.5 hour he looked at me and asked why we were wanting to chain up our rented cadillac escalade 4X4-- so i asked a sheriff warming up - he said no worries with 4x4 - just get at it -

so then i asked the guy with the 5 gallon buckets about his chain business cause he gave me a card - seems he would sell loads of chins in these moments - install them and then drive up to the top of the mountain and pick them from the ditch in the spring - from where people had unchained and tossed them --

hmm a recurring business model --

regards
