Thanks Mark. Was just reading a post of yours' on the samba re: 16" tires.

The Mefro 15" is 6" wide. Current plans: drop nose of clamshell with longer bolt, spacer, add length to latch or do same plus cut back clamshell at rear portion and lower rear end hinges with plate steel arms; I'd prefer keeping the OEM bars above the spare tire. Since I'm picking up the new wheels and tires en route to a trip through US the challenge is to figure out the spare tire holder before I leave.

I did a quick measurement between frame rails and see ~ 27 3/8" at mid point.
