So the gas ABA 2.0 engine oil pan bolt spec is significantly higher than Vanagon 1.6 NA diesel but I think both engines use aluminum front and rear crank seal carriers; 2 or 3 oil pan bolts thread into each carrier. Bentley manuals for oil pan bolt torque spec....

Vanagon diesel: 7 ft lbs VW Fox 1.8 gas: 15 ft lbs. Mk3 2.0 gas: 15 ft lbs. Getting close to that value felt really wrong though the rubber gasket at windage tray compresses a bit.

http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=76249 for Mk4 TDI: 11 ft lbs Haynes manual for the Mk2 gas engines show a spec for Allen head bolts and a higher spec for cap type bolts.

I'm going to use 10 ft lbs for Allen head bolts.

Neil.
