For those of you with KYB shocks, there is a problem with some of them where the nut bottoms out on the stud before the shock is actually tight. You can add a few washers between the shock bushing washer and the nut to take up the slack and cure the noise.

Been listening to noises like that for years, thousands of miles, across the country a couple of times, and still don't know what the heck it is. Everything checks out OK. Maybe our hearing, in an 'ol bus, is too good, or too selective. Maybe it's some gear or tools banging around. If competent folks, and yourself, can't find anything wrong, take it easy and try to worry less. I've been trying for years ;o)

In my 18 yrs of vanagon ownership I have had shocks make clunky noises if they aren't tightened enough (always rear) and front cv-joint that had a cracked cage. I always replace ball joints about every 10 yrs, so don't know if they make noise.
