Once you see the new grommets it should be apparent that the old ones simply died a slow death. I doubt VW intended them to last 20 or 30 years??

The gas leak could be from elsewhere. i.e. when filling tank, I can't see the expansion tanks filling to top with fuel. IMO, you made the right call ordering new grommets. Patching the old ones is just asking for trouble. Ask me how I know! (BTDT)
