Eric, fyi Mark Drillock is not MarkWard on thesamba (who you have apparently met in person at a race and gotten along well with, so I'm a bit surprised at your dismissing him so abruptly). What he is is someone who has been a resource for Vanagon people, especially on electrical matters; and a highly-respected member of the Vanagon LIst, for many years -- and has never in my experience had a hard word for anybody. You might want to mend your fences there.

Terry Kay, who as you've found out can indeed be very helpful -- is also one of the roughly four people in my awareness who have been kicked off the Vanagon List in the last 20 years for flagrant assholery of one sort or another. Several years ago when Ben Tan and I became co-moderators of the list (I'm no longer actively co-moderating, and this is in no way a moderator message) we considered whether to invite those people back, and did in fact invite two of them. One rejoined on the condition that he keep his opinions as an unreconstructed WWII Nazi to himself, and he made an honest effort but was unable to do so and had to be dismissed again. Terry we decided was too much trouble to invite back. He was nice as pie in your samba thread, but if you look around you'll find he's famous for bad behavior there as well. This may have colored Mark D's response a touch, as there are few old-timers around who have not had a run-in with TK at some time.

I have no trouble with your defending Terry and I do so myself from time to time; but it has to come with an awareness that he is a barrel of powder with a lit fuse who seriously pisses a lot of people off and has done so over many years.

Yours, David
