I've got a Dennis Haynes hitch on the back of my van. That sucker's mounted woth three BIG bolts to the frame on each side. It is hell for stout and has saved me more than a few times, otherwise I probably would have engine mount/clutch chatter seversl times over. If you are going to add a hitch, make sure its a good one like the Haynes Hitch. I've had that hitch quite a while no and it has served well. I really like the way it is anchored so securely to the frame.

Was that one of those tow hitches that attaches to the engine carrier for support? If so possible the carrier moved and sheared the rear mounts. Also, was it towed? Flatbed operators love to hook the chains to the rear carrier. That will often bend it back and also shear the mounts.

It is common for a clutch to have chatter problems more pronounced in reverse. Different ratio, direction change etc. However with the hydraulic clutch the effect of lose or worn mounts is somewhat cancelled out. A bad transmission input shaft or pinion bearing can also cause this effect.

Hi to all again,

I got this van after it had an accident in the back. The engine was saved by the towing unit, but the rear hatch was hit and the area where it locks was pushed in bad. Now, as I try to reverse it, shudders like nothing I’ve ever seen. Yet, going forward, has no such syndrome at all. So, I was hoping, some of you might know exactly what it is. Anyone?

Best wishes to all, Zoltan
