I'm sure there are exceptions to this, but in my experience water pumps kind squeal, alternators kind of rattle, and lifters clatter, and those noises are distinctive.

Would second using a stethoscope. Sounds can sound like they're coming from one spot but turn out to be at another. Not saying the screwdriver method doesn't work just that it might be easier to pin point the noise with stethescope.
