I'm only familiar, hands-on, with a 5sp diesel Vanagon transmission as installed in my own 84 tintop "westie" with it's hybrid gas inline ABA (2.0l) motor. I will say I'd probably not own a Vanagon except for how well I think the 5sp gearbox works for me. I have the factory rear end ratio and I prefer my current tire size (195 r 14) over the stock size, I think they are about 8% larger in diameter than stock tires... I've run both happily, but the 195s put my preferred downshift at around 65mph, so 5th back to 4th is useful and lets me hold speed when I come to a long grade without stressing my motor with high rpm...3700<4000 in 4th..Appx. I'd think a TDI might get by with a 4sp, given the torque, but on the other end, 1st gear is my granny gear, seldom-used in daily driving but very effective when off the highway or on steep starts. A turbo might be happy with a very low first, given their needs for some rpm before they have torque. I often drive past WBX vanagons on hills or headwinds, and I'm hearing very low rpms, painfully low...Or they are in 3rd, and moving slowly... A big $ for the Weddell...But a big improvement, if they work as well as a factory 5 SP...I.M.H.O.

Looks like a viable option. I've read it moves 1st down past the lockout though. I'd have to modify my shifter since that would drive me nuts.
