We went there in October 2014 and stayed at Cherry Park. It's a huge RV campground northeast of DC. They claim to be the closest campground to Washington DC. As you might expect, the sites are packed close together, but you won't be at the campground much anyway. There is a regular shuttle bus to the train station, but after taking it the first day with no problem we missed the depart time the second day and decided to drive. It's only 2 miles away and at that time if you parked in one of the lots fartherest from the station the parking was free. The train ride to DC takes 45 minutes to an hour. We took the Blue Ridge Parkway to get there and stayed at campgrounds on the parkway, but it is a slower drive.
