Even if the bushing is fine, I would strongly recommend looking into an Karl’s adapter and a TDi gear reduction starter. The starters are more readily available and cheaper than the GoWesty alternative … IMHO they perform better (though I have not tested the latest generation of GoWesty offering).

As for the bushing, look at it carefully, flashlight. If it is not worn or damaged do not change it. To remove you need something to grab it from inside to pull it out. A 3/8 tap can set some threads and then you can pull it out with a bolt or threaded rod and nut. If the housing is worn or damaged and the bushing is lose you will need to come up with another starter option. > > Before beginning disconnect the battery(s). Yes, if you have an auxiliary battery depending on the control scheme this may need to be disconnected also. > > Have a backup plan. I no longer use the Bosch starters. Just too many bad ones. Intermittent solenoids and slow cranking are the common ailments. Options include the GoWesty starters and Karl Mullendore offers adapters to use others. > > Dennis > > > > > -----Original Message----- > From: Vanagon Mailing List [mailto:vanagon@gerry.vanagon.com] On Behalf Of Lacy, Reed H > Sent: Saturday, January 21, 2017 3:42 AM > To: vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM > Subject: Replacing the starter on my 87 westy > > My main project for tomorrow is to replace the starter on my 87 Westfalia with the rebuilt Bosch that arrived from Parts Geek earlier this week. I'm far more a bicycle mechanic than an auto mechanic, but I've watched a few videos on this and it doesn't look very hard to do (though getting the old 'bushing' out looks just a bit tricky). If anyone could share with me a good tutorial on this I'd greatly appreciate it. > > Cheers... Reed
