Yeah Dan, I'd pull the dash.  That's what I did when I serviced my clutch pedal (had a "clicking" but hole was NOT ovaled nor was the pin worn; just lubricated generously and clicking was gone and has been fine for 6 years.)  My van is an 85, but most of the miles are long distance highway driving; so that explains why hole was not worn but was making clicking noise....lack of lubrication after 25 years.

Pulling the dash gives you a chance to brighten up all kinds of electrical contacts like the ground cluster on the driver side (AND apply grease on all electrical contacts to prevent further corrosion issues), and lubrication of "all things hidden" of moving parts like vent/heater controls and the like.  Also to fabricate some foam seals for those vent things.  And just look around in general.

Thinking back, I don't see HOW I could have ever mastered removing clutch pedal assembly WITHOUT removing dash; it was complicated enough for me with dash removed and everything out in the open.  I'm just a basic homebody mechanic; my entire tool kit fits in a medium ammo box; would never try engine work or anything like that.  Even little things like removing and re-installing the circlip ring that retained some shaft caused me grief because it's awkward to get to; but somehow I got it all done.  A more skilled mechanical guy wouldn't even have blinked.

I've said before.....removing the dash is NOT hard.  But it IS time consuming.  And you will learn a new form of Yoga!!  Don't be rushed on the removal or replacement; just methodically do it.  Ben'sPlace on the internet has a great series of photos of the step-by-step process.  It's a full weekend job for sure.  Just relax and enjoy it.
