If you want to go ALL THE WAY, put in a 2.5 V6 TDI with auto trans.

Also you can check thesamba.com forums, where I offered the gearbox conversion kit as public domain.

132kw 370Nm, test-driveable in Northern Germany. Although, you need a lot of mileage to eliminate the conversion cost by cheap Diesel ;-)
