I have been quite happy with the 1.9 TDi ALH. It has a mild tune (stock turbo, pump and injectors) and is supposedly putting out about 150hp/225ft-lb (triple the 48hp/74ft-lb of the 1.6NA it replaced). It cruised comfortably up the mountain passes in Colorado at 70+mph and there was plenty of room to push the pedal down further.
