Thanks Karl. Almost missed your reply.

This makes more sense now; the kep or whatever set up is designed for the original Bosch starter to work properly.

I was, and may still be leaning towards your adaptor plus TDI starter setup, but am Leary of trying to remove the starter stud at clutch housing while on this road trip; I'm not equipped to deal with a snapped stud.... If I'm not misunderstanding the instructions I see on vancafe a web page.
