Regarding "having proper teflon tape and dope"
As a Plumber in the state of KY who plans to replace some parts of his own in the very near future, I wouldn't worry about "proper" tape so much. Whatever teflon tape you have will take up the tolerance between the fittings' threads. But the dope?...I plan to use Green "Key-Tite"because it's proper for gas fitting, and seals when it dries plus lasts a long time, as opposed to, say, teflon paste, which gets brittle and comes off later.
Key-tire will he harder to remove later, but won't need to be removed and replaced/redone as soon as teflon paste, imho.
So, to answer your question about where to get it?...Home Depot or Lowe's, or any hardware store.
