RE: Downloading and Installing the Ultimate Campgrounds Files into a GPS

Larry, Simple answer is yes IF your GPS receiver allows the loading of POI files. And the three Garmin units I have used all have. The Garmin website has the software to download and allow this. BUT POI files must be comma delimited files, .cvs format. The Ultimate Campgrounds file is one monster .cvs file that needs to be loaded into Excel and split into separate files by type then loaded into the Garmin. Or not. You could load the entire file if you wanted to. But it contains thousands of locations that are of little or no use to a Westy driver. Like sites along the Pacific Rim Trail or tent only sites or cabins and yurts etc. Even water access only sites. So I load into a spreadsheet (current file is too big for Open Office, have to use Excel) and since there is all the info needed I delete out the sites, by type, that I would never be able to use. Or campgrounds in Alaska or other areas that I don't plan on being anywhere near. In the past I have saved by type, like Forest Service, COE, etc. and then load into the Garmin as separate files. I got lazy when I loaded the most recent file to my current Garmin. I loaded the file into a spreadsheet and stripped off all the sites I'd never use and then loaded the remaining file without separating it into individual files by type. And that may be the way to go, works just as well.
