I use these when on a roadtrip looking for campgrounds: http://www.uscampgrounds.info/ https://freecampsites.net/ I've found them to be pretty reliable.  By the way, I use a WiFi Hotspot I bought at Walmart:  https://www.walmart.com/ip/Straight-Talk-ZTE-Z288C-4G-LTE-Mobile-Wifi-Hotspot/39443644When I'm getting ready for a roadtrip of a few weeks duration, I buy some data.  I'm very pleased so far with the excellent coverage and reasonable price, and it's "pay as you go" so no contracts; it's nice to have internet for my laptop virtually anywhere I can get a cellphone signal.  (I don't have a smartphone.) Also, I do have a Garmin Nuvi 1300 GPS; I often use it to search for campgrounds too, or to help me get to a campground I found on the above noted sites.  Sure is a lot easier than than the old days of maps and books, but I admit that I'll often use a paper state map (usually free at the Welcome Center for whatever state I've just arrived in) to help find my way. It's all become very natural to use a combination of all of the above.  And if all else fails, with my tintop I go into stealth-camping mode and can make do at a Starbucks, Walmart, or similar.
