If You mean by this, That as You "Relaxed the Key" the Starter Energized ~ That would be an indication

that the Ignition Switch is Faulty ~

As for the Grounds ~ If the Ground Strap @ the Front of the Trany is in Good Condition then Your Broken

Ground Strap is not Essential to Crank the Starter ~ But ~ The More Good Grounds the Better ~ I Like to Add

a Ground Strap from a Starter Motor Mounting Bolt to some Nice Bare Metal spot close by in the Eng' Bay ~
