Subject: Westy propane tank fill valve fix
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8

Thanks to everyone who replied when I reported my fill valve gave out on the way to DC last week. Since it was so cold (15 the first night) and I had my ten-year-old grandson with me and we were on a schedule to see the Smithsonian museums, I forewent any attempt to make a repair on the road or put the camper in a shop somewhere along the way. We checked into a hotel in Falls Church.

Thanks to the help on this list, I knew what to ask for and where to get it so I had no trouble finding a fill valve and, for good measure, a new bleed valve on my return home. I installed those early this morning and went out for a fill at lunch, expecting possible trouble because Stewart had mentioned that, because the replacement valves are shorter than the original by an inch and a half or so, there was interference with the fill valve and it hit the body of the car and needed an extender.

I did not have any such problem, BUT I have not put the stone guard on the bottom of the tank yet. I left it off mainly because until I got a little propane in the tank, I didn't know if there were leaks or not. Fortunately, there were not and it filled right up with 3.32 gallons of propane.

So, should I expect interference when the stone guard goes on? If so there is a very nice brass extension available locally for $104 but obviously I don't want to buy it if I don't need it.

Jim
