I can recommend the Worthington 4 lb. tank a replacement for 4, 1 lb. disposable canisters if you are considering a refillable propane tank. When you transport it, it will fit in the back cabinet but you will need to remove the middle shelf. I put in a new lower shelf with 1/2 inch plywood and 2 inch supports to store the required propane hoses to work with the coleman and backup tank for the westy when I run out for the refrigerator. There has been some issue about purging a new tank. The only thing I can consider is the issue here is that you may overfill the tank if there is any air in the tank because propane is more easily compressed than air. When you fill it to the full level with air the internal pressure will be too high if there is any air. I purged the tank with about 4 oz. of propane from a small 1 lb. canister shaking the tank as I expelled the propane, added another 4 oz. and the tank works fine on the coleman. garyWorthington Pro Grade 4.25 lb. Subject: Re: advice on new propane tankSo, I called Banner Fuel, the largest propane distributor in Spokane
County. I explained to the person I spoke with what I had experienced at
the RV dealer, with the two guys first disagreeing about the procedure, and
then settling on filling the tank five times, releasing the gas each time
before filling again, and running a total of 10+ gallons through the tank.1. He laughed.
2. He told me not to try to use any appliance until I have the tank
properly purged, as the tank probably still contains some air. He knew I
was talking about a small tank, 3.3 gallon capacity according to Manchester
Tank, the manufacturer.
3. He told me to bring my van in, and that he would purge it properly and
refill it, only charging me for the gas used for the procedure and to fill
the tank. The RV guys charged me a "purge fee" of $15.
3. BTW, the user's pamphlet that came with the tank states that purging is
required, regardless of tank size, and that attempting to use appliances
without doing so will provide poor performance. That is how I knew to purge
the tank in the first place. It does not mention any hazards due to doing
so, but I can certainly see how there might be hazards, or at least
shortened tank life.mcneely
