I use green or orange parts store coolant my TD Vanagon, at least the phosphate free kind that is specified for the Vanagon. I don't know if you are talking about a VW TDI car that came with that engine or a Vanagon with a TDI conversion, but the TDI Jetta I have specifies G12 (pink) coolant. Whether or not it is a benefit to the environment, the materials used in the car or both, the Jetta anyway uses so little coolant compared to the Vanagon that the difference in cost is hardly worth the risk. Using G12 in the huge Vanagon system would be another story because you need two gallons to fill it and you can't mix the two types.

I guess the question would be, what is pink coolant doing for you that orange or green coolant isn't? It won't be the head that suffers from the wrong coolant, most likely, it would be the heater core, radiator, etc. of the TDI. We know that those components on a Vanagon don't need G12.
