All I can tell you is it's not magic and electrons don't change their ways. My '84 had the old type switch and my '85 the newer one with different terminals (and different engagement depth in the transmission). From taking both apart I can say that the old one was better constructed - but they both failed while I had the vans. From water getting in past the crimp.
