Hey, thanks everyone for reaching out and offering help. The screechy wheel
preoccupied me that night at the campground.
In the morning, when we had the van packed up, I had Kathleen walk along
looking at, and listening to the wheel as we backed out of our space.
Nothing. Nada.
So I drove at low speed with her paying attention. Went backwards, and
forwards. Tried some sudden braking, then gradual half braking.
Drove into the little town of Toronto, KS. like that. Made the decision, to
just get the hell out of Dodge. (actually, Dodge City is east of there)
So we went for it, trucked on to Pueblo, CO. and a K.O.A.
Then crossed the Rockies at Monarch pass (easier than I expected)
The voyage got really good once we're rolling down the west side of the
Rockies.
That night, we picked a little bitty town on U.S.50 in Utah, called
Thompson Spring. It sits below a huge, roadless wilderness, with a Ute
territory 150 miles north.
We got into this town, if you can call it that, rolled up the tiny road to
Sego Canyon, found a spot by the town's water tower.
We found a level spot, deployed all Vanagon camping tech. Had lentils and
flatbread. Went for a walk. Beautiful night. We could clearly see mountains
150 miles away, at 1am.
next morning, drove up Sego Canyon. There's an awesome ghost town, and we
saw petroglyphs. That area has a lot of petroglyphs.
There were other travelers making their way up the canyon in the morning.
but had to leave their trailers and RVs - couldn't cross the deep washes in
the road. *Modesto* my vanagon, made short work of it. As you all know,
vanagon gets into the hard-to-reach areas. Turns on a dime.
That stay-over was an awesome, random experience. Unique to vanagon I
believe. We were the only rig that could get up the canyon. Everyone else
was in a crowded RV park next to the highway. I felt like we were near the
Gods of the four-corners. There's a distinct energy there. Most relaxing
place I've ever been.
