My Vanagon has a non stock engine running Motronic, but to echo Stacy's comments, the Bentley service manual for my engine has a preface in the Motronic trouble shooting section that directs the user to check for things like vacuum leaks etc before chasing down any trouble codes. IIRC, that section includes comments about inspecting wiring and connectors to engine and engine ancillaries. If it doesnt, it should. Inspecting for damage at casing on wires to connectors at these parts, doesn't take a lot of time.

During this mega road trip ive been on, i had a random intermittent stall at speed which turned into a nasty stall during a left turn in an intersection. How timely. To the best of my knowledge this was caused by a corroded connector at hall on distributor. I cleaned the contacts, the issue dd not recur. The 2.1 Vanagon has a very similar purpose hall sensor and connector.

Neil.
