Put a sawhorse with a chain hoist over the rear hatch and lower the engine itself or engine/transmission to the ground, then drop the transmission nose with any old jack. Doesn't matter if the car is running or not. On a water boxer unless you can lift pretty high you will have to remove the oil tower and the coolant manifold before doing this. Diesel no problem. Then slide it out on a piece of carpet or, again if you don't need the clearance, on a flat dolly.
