I just weighed one of mine ( made two extra for clothes line etc) and it weighs 12g. Not bad for the thick walled stuff.

If you removed half of the circle then you'd end up with pretty well the same tensioner as the bent strip type . Would work fine I think. But I like the looks of the circle. Apart from aesthetics, the complete circle makes it easier to grab and adjust.

I'll take the weight penalty in the van :-)
