I recently had my hands on several different brands of used shocks. It wasn't hard to feel the failure mode or wear. e.g. in the same brand and vintage shocks, the difference in feel by hand in failed low mile near new vs new, was obvious even to this untrained DIY type. I'd suggest that there's a lot of Vanagons out there running on the original springs. Sagging (too short) springs would most likely aid in damaging new shocks. Neil.
