I second Roy's comment. As an American it is a huge pain in the backside to bring any kind of firearm (even sport weapons) into Canada. I lived in Alberta for a few years and didn't bother taking my shotgun. It was easier just to leave it with my father in law in the states.

You're probably better off transferring ownership in the states and letting the counter-party manage importation into Canada (it will be easier for him/her as a Canadian national).
