I suspect those periscopes were heavy steel and glass affairs and were carried by one soldier in the field, so weight was a factor. Probably had several of these stakes, hence the aluminum. Those are cast (probably from scrap aluminum), so they are brittle, but yours are fabricated from sheet aluminum, much stronger!
