When you take it apart there is a 100% probability that the cross rod will be partially cut through because of the poor design Westfalia came up with. Easiest way to fix is to weld and grind down the weld to fit. Best not to paint the ends that go into the elbows, they are already a tight fit. http://t3wiki.org/wiki/File:PushBarGroove.jpg I can pmail you photos of mine.

Jack Bombay's gas springs are an essential addition to any Vanagon Westy and will help this from happening again.

Cunegonde has been in the Northwest her entire life since she was imported. Needless to say there was the usual mildew farm in the lid flocking, and corrosion on the pop top frame and lock. I also stripped, cleaned and re-installed all the upholstery. Who knew it wasn't stripes over camouflage pattern?!

Now that the soft bits are cleaned, It's time to re-finish all of the galvanized steel up there. I prefer to clean the galvanizing, and then use a two-part epoxy paint that can handle lubricating the various joints & bearing surfaces. Or should I go for powder coating - seems expensive for interior pieces.

What sayeth the list wisdom?
