Unfortunately there is no way around that little divot unless I'd use a super-thin nut and deeper recess in the adaptor. Since that bolt is one of four engine mounting bolts strength is most important.

Also, FWIW, LAtrical aha California Alternator and Starter sells a new, quality TDI starter for $85 shipped. Amazon/eBay. I have one on my own automagic van.
