So I removed the muffler. When I shake it, I hear what sounds like sand inside it but next to nothing came out.

I shoved a piece of wire through pipe into the cat. The wire stopped near the cat inlet so who knows; there may well be some element left. I will probably delete it for now.

quite a narrow passage. Probably designed that way to catch cat debris. I suspect he perforated sections would allow some exhaust gases out in the event debris is caught.
