Washed the mattress covers, just using dish soap and water, by hand, after
remembering that the last time I washed mattress covers, I used my previous
non-agitator washing machine that had to be junked after only three years
because parts cost more than a new machine.
The larger cover was a bear to handle by hand. Beyond the urine, the
covers had a lot of extremely fine sand like material evidently from the
mattresses (same orange color as discolored portions of the foam), though
the foam itself seemed intact and springy. After the first wash the orange
material showed up on the outside of the covers (initially just inside on
the lining). Took numerous washings to get it all out.
The foam pads themselves I tried to wash with a spray nozzle on a garden
hose (too big to fit in my utility sink in the garage, and all bathtubs are
on upper stories, which would create quite a logistics nightmare). The
foam is so dense that I could not get water to penetrate all the way
through despite a high pressure spray. Did the best I could, and left
outside in the air and sun. We'll see what results.
