Hello Westy Types,

I have been off and on this list over the years, and thought I would I become active again with a travel report.

First, I noticed some messages about engines. I have an '85 Westy, and two years ago installed the GW 2300. At the same time I exchanged the transaxle for a rebuild from German Transaxle with a custom 3rd and 4th gear and super differential. I have about 10,000 miles on both.

I have been very happy with both, although if I drive above 75 mph for an extended time it does use some oil. Driving locally there is no oil consumption. My mechanic has suggested maybe I switched to synthetic too soon and should use conventional oil for a while longer, so I am trying that.

So, to the point, just finished a trip from Boise, ID to East Glacier Park, MT, to Banff, then Jasper NP, and back by way of Whitefish and Missoula. Altogether about 2600 miles. Half of that was mountain driving, or at least rolling, and still averaged just over 20 mpg (I get 16-17 around town, 21 on highway if I keep it under 65). I generally kept it at about 70-75 mph or less on this trip, and used about 3/4 of a qt of 10-40 for the entire trip. I have no complaints about that, and otherwise the engine and trans have been great.

Dave Boise, ID
