Subject: LVC. Stereo Wiring: switch to prohibit battery drain
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8"

Hi all.

So for those who want to connect their stereo so it can be turned on without turning the key to "ignition on" (or use the key in Su circuit) but also want to keep the stereo from draining the battery when van is sitting unused for a while......

Do you install a switch at the "constant" positive wire (typically yellow) or connect both the OEM switched wire (typically red) and "constant" wire to that switch?

In the past, I've wired my stereo so that one switch controls power to the constant and OEM switched wires. What I found was that with that switch closed (on), but the stereo turned off, the stereo has quite often turned itself on. My theory is that if the power switch on the stereo, face plate contacts or some sensitive internal component had a fault or abnormal sensitivity, the stereo could turn itself on. That aside, if the stereo is switched at the "constant" power wire, that goes against the manufactures design. Would switching at that wire (circuit) cause long term wear and tear to internal components?

Neil.
