Whoah, that's a really good point. Mine was a 1983, with the speakers mounted down in the dog-leg of the door. I recall my my 1990 had them mounted much higher, and those flat Blaupunkts just fit under the handle. I just went out and measured my new speakers and they protrude exactly 35mm/1 inch off the door card at the slightly raised center. You could save a little by leaving off the grille, the naked speaker isn't too bad looking. For what it's worth they are about 1/2 inch deeper in the magnet on the back, too, than the OEM speakers were.
