Yea Neil I've put a golf/Jetta league 80s early 90s dome light in. Same look as the vanagon lamp but with the delay circuit.

I haven't bothered to look at the circuitry. But the delay off feature happens after 6 - 7 seconds, that's light on then off . No dimming as it goes off as you find it other cars ( ie BMW).

What do you think the voltage drop profile will look like in your circuit? Maybe a bit of a dimming then off? Leds don't dim that well with decreasing voltage, there is a minimum voltage to make it light up.
