It's not really a gel coat, but that's beside the point :-)

Some have used penetrol, oil based paint additive, with success. Search in Samba for a few threads.

I painted my top with interlux briteside one part polyurethane. I was very happy with the result.

Briefly, I cleaned the top well, scuffed with scotchbrite pad, and didn't use a primer ( worked out, but primer good idea).

Short napped 4" roller, actually I think it was foam roller. Two foot square at a time, tipping off the painted area with brush. Tipping to knock down bubbles, which didn't remove all bubbles but after a few minutes the bubbles disappeared.

Key is to do it in small areas.
