Bosch Automotive Handbook says half a volt total drop on supply side acceptable for most 12V automotive circuits, assuming ground through chassis.

Littelfuse specifies their ATO fuses to carry 110% rated load for minimum 100 hours, to blow at 135% in maximum 600 seconds (minimum 3/4 second), at 160% in maximum 50 seconds, at 200% in maximum 5 seconds. At 600% in maximum 100 or 150 (35 and 40A) millisecs.

I think VAG were wrongheadedly old-fashioned in leaving unfused wires all about. Judging by the '09 Passat I just looked at, they've caught up to the Japanese and the rest of the world in fusing everything that comes off the battery barring the starter cable.
