Find someone you can borrow an idle control unit from, or take it to a mechanic that has one. These are all failing after 30 years in a wet environment, and can cause this sort of problem, among others. http://www.gowesty.com/product-details.php?v=&id=23468

Morning all,

I've recently developed an idling issue after replacing the coil in our 86 2.1L.

At a cold start, the van will idle at around 1000 rpm. After a few minutes, the idle will build to 2500 rpm. The van runs well on the road, but whenever I pull up to a stop light the rpm's bump up to 2500. I can tap the gas and get it to drop to 1000 for a sec, but then it's right back up there at 2500...

The AFM is fairly new and I pulled the rubber boot from it to the intake and there seems to be no cracks/air leaks. Any thoughts on what to look for next?

Thanks, Jvk
