So last night I was out and about and around town in my 86 Westyand got home at 10:30 pm and parked the van overnight. The van was running well - no symptoms no concerns.

This morning I had made arrangements with my wife to take the kids to day camp so she could head to work a little earlier. Anyway we all piled into the van to head out to camp and the van would start right up but would not idle or run at all - not unless I had my foot on the gas pedal. Very perplexing....how can a vehicle be running really well 8 hours beforehand and not idling the next day?

Luckily my wife hadn't left so she took the girls to camp and I walked to work thinking about possible issues.

Fast forward to about 15 minutes ago - I grabbed a beer and decided to start looking at the engine compartment for anything obvious - hoping that my limited mechanical skills would detect something. As I scanned over the idle stabilizer and throttle housing - something caught my eye - the idle adjusting screw was missing and there was an air entry hole in the housing where the screw should have been. I looked below the housing and saw the screw - very lucky! I screwed it back in and found a place that seems to work for now - until I take the van to my mechanic to properly set the adjustment. Just took it for a quick test and everything seems to be back to relative normalcy.

I wonder how often this occurs? Anyway I thought I'd share the experience as another one of those things to check.

Bruce
