Well, the instructions with the tape certainly don't say anything about a need for heating. Just stretch and wrap. It wraps on very tightly. The higher pressure is probably the main factor. Initially it seems nice and tight, and doesn't leak, then fairly quickly leaks develop between the layers. However, mending garden hoses is one of the applications the manufacturer claims it is good for.
