You got a water boxer starter.

There are 2 and only 2 diesel starters. Both sold as Bosch SR28X. One is direct drive, the other is gear reduction. I have the gear reduction one in my Diesel and the direct drive one in the ABA. Both came from Rock Auto.

The first two offered: The Pure Energy illustrates gear reduction and the Bosch below it is the direct drive. As far as VW/Bosch is concerned, they’re fully interchangeable. Order one and you may get either one. I prefer the direct drive as there are fewer parts to fail and the gas motor is easy to spin.
