Thanks Dennis. It seems my distributor cap had an unusual failure at about 6000miles, given that the crack goes almost to the top of the unit and it seems I could easily pull it into two pieces.

I found that my air intake sensor was barely contacting the air intake hose -- it was making more of a suggestion than a connection.

There has got to be an easier way to graduate from Vanagon School.

I'm going to rename Betty to Miracle Betty.
