I’d take it to a good locksmith and have the steering wheel lock mechanism removed (it should be possible, but I’ve not done it). It doesn’t deter thieves anyway because they jam a screwdriver into the key slot and wrench the cylinder until the pins shear, defeating the steering wheel lock.

With key coded ignitions on modern cars this technique doesn’t work, that’s why they go after older cars. Get “The Club” for a visual deterrent that takes a bit longer to defeat. Thieves would need to hacksaw the steering wheel, and most “free riders” won’t bother since there is likely an old Honda or Subaru, etc., nearby that’s easier to steal and drive until the gas runs out.

If you are really concerned about theft, have an alarm installed that has an ignition interlock along with using the The Club (what I have done), so they (hopefully) don’t even think about breaking in in the first place.

Hey all

An update.

So, turns out the lock I ordered from busdepot was faulty. But they happily sent me a replacement (thanks!)

This one turns freely, but I still appear to be having trouble. It seems like it's the housing. I spoke to steveslockshop, he's unsure, as he doesn't deal with the housing. I also spoke to a vw shop and the guy said it sounds like the steering wheel column lock thingy inside the housing is stuck, or jammed.

The tab (in the housing, where the steering column slides on) seems to move freely in and out.

When I place the lock cylinder into the housing, it no longer turns.

I'm so frustrated by this project. Please help!!

Thanks

Laura

Thanks. Great for the removal, but can't get it back in. Any ideas anyone?

Hi all,

In need of assistance installing a new ignition lock cylinder in 85 1.9l vanagon.

I've got the old, broken one out but cannot, I mean cannot get the new one in properly....

What's the trick?

The part is from busdepot. When I put the key in the lock cylinder and try to turn it, it doesn't turn. Seems normal as the old one doesn't turn either now that's it's out of the housing.

I attempted to put the new lock cylinder in the housing with the key in it, and the cylinder won't stay in the housing, it slides right out and the key won't turn. Okay, so I take the cylinder out, Take the key out, and install. Goes right in and clicks (locks) into place. But... now the key won't go in at all.

Please help. I can't find any info in the Bentley about it.

Thanks

Laura
