There was two places on Oahu a few years ago, we rented one for ten days there. One had very nice looking vans that appeared well taken care of the other not so much but their vans looked "local" which had its benefits. Even with our pale Alaskan skin tone people thought we lived on the islands and we were never bothered camping all over the island, which is technically illegal unless you are actively fishing, and/or have a tent pitched. We never stayed at an official campground overnight as there aren't many and even most of them don't want people sleeping in vehicles.
